Not Without Housing, Security, and Schools: What Nationwide Data Modelling from 2020 Tells Us About the Prospects for Safe and Sustainable Returns in Syria
Displaced Syrians still require international protection and must not be forced to return. Past modelling of nationwide data shows that housing issues (destruction, presence of mines, and illegal occupation), a host of security concerns, and lack of schools specifically were key determinants of depopulation via displacement over the conflict. These issues persist and some have pre-conflict antecedents. This brief details the modelling, its findings, and the need for a robust humanitarian-development-peace nexus response that simultaneously engages in all aspects of the resolution of displacement.
