When Canals Run Dry: Displacement Triggered by Water Stress in the South of Iraq
This research and report explores the displacement triggered by water scarcity in the south of Iraq. The findings are based on quantitative and qualitative data collected between June and July 2019 among both displaced and non-displaced people from Basra, Missan, and Thi-Qar governorates. They shed light on government responses to environmental degradation along with loss of rural livelihoods and associated forced displacement. These dynamics are increasingly relevant and necessary to understand in light of both the increasing effects of climate change and the growing demands for social change in the country.
