Conflict and Stabilization Monitoring Framework for Ninewa

Social Inquiry developed a set of 92 indicators, in coordination with the United States Institute of Peace and Sanad for Peacebuilding, to monitor conflict and stabilization across five, inter-linked vectors: governance, reconciliation and justice, social cohesion and wellbeing, rule of law, and safety and security. These indicators are specifically designed for ethno-religiously diverse communities, with data collection occurring over multiple rounds within Hamdaniya, Telafar, and Sinjar districts in Ninewa Governorate.

The focus of data collection is among the predominant identity-groups residing in these areas (or displaced from them). The schedule of data collection to date is as follows, with increasing geographical coverage as areas became more accessible:

  • Round 1: February 2018, sample size of 1,100 respondents

  • Round 2: August 2018, sample size of 1,505 respondents

  • Round 3: April 2019, sample size of 1,851 respondents

  • Round 4: October 2020, sample size of 2,002 respondents

  • Round 5: May 2021, sample size of 2,009 respondents

  • Round 6: November 2021, sample size of 2,002 respondents

Data and analysis here serve as a singularly robust evidence-base to understand and track inter- and intra-group dynamics, as they evolve over time due to changes in context as well as interventions by civil society and local authorities aimed at co-existence and reconciliation.
